So, how does drinking water help you lose weight? Now that you know how it can benefit you, how can you cut that fat!?
#1 – Drinking Water Reduces Water Retention
People sometimes believe that TOO much water leads to water retention. This really isn’t true as retention occurs as a survival mechanism in the body. This means that when you are depriving your body of pure water, it holds on to any type of water it can. It normally stores this water around your belly (aka: Muffin Top).
Once you start drinking water consistently, your body starts to realize it is receiving a steady supply and will start letting go of the water it’s holding. *Important Note*: The trick to reduce your water retention means drinking consistently throughout the day. Drink water in the AM. Drink water in the middle of the day. Stick to the 8 glasses of water per day at intervals throughout the day. Don’t chug a ton of water at night or mid-day and think that you’ll be good. It doesn’t work that way.
#2 – Drinking Water Supercharges your Metabolism
Everyone loves a fast metabolism! Your metabolism can be supercharged with help from the kidneys and liver. Remember above when I mentioned that your liver is 95% of water? Your kidneys and liver work together to flush toxins out of your system, and break down protein and fat. When you don’t drink enough water, your kidneys don’t process the fat and toxins as fast, and rely on your liver. With your liver doing double duty, your metabolism naturally slows down.
Also, studies have shown that drinking water helps with exercise. This means that even the slight dehydration can cause major performance decrease in exercise. Water can help you get those last two reps, that last mile in, and that last pound lost. Drink up, friend.
#3 – Appetite Control with Drinking Water to Lose Weight
If you haven’t done this yet, I want you to do this: Before you eat a meal, or when you start to get that hunger pain, drink a big glass of water. Studies have shown that your body can give you the sensation like you’re hungry when you are actually thirsty. To combat this, have a glass of water before meals, it can help greatly influence how many excess calories you avoid.
