I have always worked out late at night. When I first did P90X (see: P90X Results), I did lose 70 pounds with the program, and always worked out anywhere from 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM. I’ll admit that sometimes those later night workouts were a killer (and yes, sometimes I would skip them because it was too late at night). But for my final three weeks of my P90X3 Journey, I am going to try out a P90X3 Morning Exercise Experiment! Why? I’ll explain below!
Why Am I trying this P90X3 Morning Exercise Experiment?
Have you ever wondered whether it was better to do P90X3 in the Morning or Evening? That is really what I’m aiming to figure out. As your coach, supporter, and motivator – I decided to try this, but it won’t be easy!
I LOVE sleeping, and honestly I’m not much of a morning person. But lately I have been a lot about morning workouts, working out before breakfast, and it’s time to make a test out of this opportunity.
As your Coach, I am always transparent about what works and what doesn’t. The reason I’m testing this is for a few reasons:
- A few people have asked me about it
- I have been interested in it to help with bringing my body fat to optimal levels
- I have seen other successful people do it (and remember success leaves clues!)
This experiment that I am doing is beyond the basics of “get it done before you start your day” and “you’ll be more committed to do it in the morning”. I specifically want to see WHAT differences it makes on my remaining body fat. According to an article I was reading, there was a study done claiming that you’ll burn 20% more body fat over time if you workout before breakfast.
For the next three weeks (final stretch of X3), I will be BRINGING IT before I go to work, and will share my experiences with all of you! Who knows, perhaps it will transform me to the “morning workout dude”, and I’ll be sharing my love and recommendations for it here. Time will tell!
P90X3 Morning Exercise Experiment – Day 1 Review
My first day of my P90X3 Morning exercise was the MMX Workout. The alarm buzzed at 6:15 AM (yes, to some that might be “late” – to me it’s “unacceptable” lol). I got up, was tired as heck, and put on the workout gear.
I did feel a little hungry at first, but decided to workout fasted (after all, it gives your body the time to burn fat storage versus using your current food that you just ate for energy – make sense?). I did drink around 8 ounces of water, and then another 8 ounces during the workout.
I have to admit, when I first started MMX I felt tired, hungry, and whiny. Think what you will, but remember – 3 years of evening workouts, and now testing this out = whiny Coach Bob. But it’s about making dreams HAPPEN, right?
As the workout progress, something interesting happened. I felt a sudden surge of energy, and then also didn’t feel as hungry (My research has shown that this could be a surge of adrenaline naturally created by the body).
After the workout, I took a shower, ate breakfast, and started work. I think the weirdest part of Day 1 was that in the evening I was feeling like I was skipping a workout!
That is it for my first review of the P90X3 Morning Workout. What time do you normally workout? Remember that if you want to try what I’m doing, that is fine, but focus on what works best for you. If there is a time that is consistent and works well for your results, stick to that!
Keep Pushing Play!

Nice review – so what’s your final verdict of working out in the morning or evening? I for one, have tried the evening – and I just don’t have any energy to move. I find that I prefer the mornings – but I have to be on a totally empty stomach as I feel light and easier to move.

atharafzal Thanks for following up on this! I did try this morning experiment for much longer than I initially intended, and for me personally, it was killing me LOL. The reason being is that I found my motivation was down and not as strong as during the evening. Now I’m back to doing them around 8-9pm. But that is the best time for me. Plenty of people do the workouts at all times of the day and night…and while there is a TON of debate out there, whatever time works best for you is the best time to workout. So keep on rocking!!
